SYC NEWSLETTER October 2026
Message from the Secretary Graham Gillies Welcome to the October Newsletter.
Our Autumn Muster in September at Rothesay proved popular again this year with 6 yachts cruising there including Catherine and Stewart Toy’s maiden club outing on Charlie Girl, their Moody 38s with 6 on board. Stiarna, Black Pepper, Emma Louise, Silverjack and Tulla Mhor were also all there. Unfortunately, as the muster coincided with Spring tides, Tulla Mhor, an Arcona 43 which draws 2.3 meters, had to anchor off due to limited depth in the inner harbour at that time. Fortunately it proved to be a settled night and 21 of us enjoyed a sociable evening and an excellent meal at the Glenburn Hotel just outside town.
Our Muster at Rothesay coincided with the Fairlie Yacht Club Muster, also at Rothesay on the same night. This meant that all the inner and outer berths were occupied that night and we are grateful to the Bute berthing team who looked after us ensuring our places and whose berthing charges included electricity and were the cheapest I had encountered all season. We were particularly pleased that the Serpent boats all made it to the muster as the Saturday had been somewhat blustery and the Dugald and Val Glen on Tulla Mhor had encountered 40kn of wind off Lochranza.
Our next Serpent event will be our Closing Supper which will be on Thursday 15th October at 6.30pm. The venue is the Italian Restaurant Barolo at 92-94 Mitchell Street which should be convenient for trains to Central or Queens Street stations. The cost is £39.95 for a three course meal in their private dining room. This informal dinner is our last chance this calendar year to meet and chat so I hope many of you will be able to come. It should be a good night. If you would like to join us, please email or text me by Monday 12th October indicating numbers in your party -email gwagillies@gmail.com text 07876 505307.
Serpent Annual Dinner For this session’s Annual Dinner we have chosen a different timing and Venue. As December tends to be a particularly busy time for most of us, and has become more expensive to book, we have decided to move the Dinner from its customary late November or early December slot to Friday 8th January 2027. Similarly, we have changed the venue to the Langley room at the Corinthian Club on Ingram Street. This is where we held this year’s 50th Anniversary Dinner where we were well received. We are hoping this bold change proves to be as popular.
